Google Home is getting even smarter – the American tech giant has announced a new function for the smart speaker called Assignable reminders that will allow owners to create alerts for those in their Google family group or with accounts linked to the same smart display or speaker.
The new tool will also work with smartphones that have the Google Assistant enabled, meaning you can create reminders for others on the go, too.
Here are a few examples of Assignable reminder commands owners can give to their devices sporting the Google Assistant.
• “Hey Google, remind Mary that she’ll do great on tomorrow’s exam.”
• “Hey Google, remind Sarah to pay rent on the last day of every month.”
• “Hey Google, remind Greg to take out the trash at 8pm.”
It is worth noting this new function will also work for location-based reminders, too.
This means if you want a family member or friend to pick up an something at a supermarket, you can set the alert to be delivered when they arrive.
Explaining the new feature, Google said: “If you’re a fellow parent, you probably spend more time than you’d like coordinating day-to-day to-dos with your partner through on the fly conversations, text messages or phone calls. From figuring out who’s picking up the kids from summer camp to who’s tackling the weekly grocery shopping, managing various schedules can be especially stressful this time of year when kids are heading back to school.”
“To help families and housemates better collaborate and stay organised while at home or on the go, we’re introducing Assignable reminders on the Google Assistant. This means you can now create reminders for your partner or roommate to do things like pick up the groceries, pay a recurring bill, walk the dog – or send them a note of encouragement when they need it the most (‘Hey Google, remind Mary that she’ll do great on tomorrow’s exam’).
“You can send and receive reminders only from the people you know and care about: those who are in your Google family group or those who have their accounts linked to the same Smart Display or speaker as you and the other user are Voice Matched. In addition, you have the control to block anyone from sending you reminders at any time through the new Assignable reminders section in Assistant Settings.”
The Mountain View firm has declared the new feature will start rolling out “over the next few weeks” in English on smartphones, smart speakers and smart displays in the UK, US and Australia.
Moreover, Google confirmed this function will work with the Google Nest Hub Max that is due to release on September 9.
The new feature for the Google Home connected home series comes as prices for the hardware have crashed.
The American tech giant is currently selling the standard Google Home for just £59 and the Nest Hub for £89.
